A Note From our Founders on Earth Day
Updated: Sep 9
From the calls to action, statistics on the climate crisis, discounts on “green” products, and hundreds of blog posts (guilty), Earth Day can feel like… a lot. If you’re like me, you’ve likely felt the need to be “perfectly” sustainable - to never have any waste, never buy anything new, never drive, etc. But, this approach to sustainability is itself unsustainable because it’s unattainable. This is why one of our core values at Beni is “Progress over Perfection”. While we are dedicated to striving for transformative change, we know that every step in that journey matters. With sustainability, it’s not about all or nothing, it’s about doing something.
Specifically for Beni, we are inspired by the McKinsey & Global Fashion Agenda report which states that “by 2030, we need to live in a world where 1 in 5 garments are traded through circular business models."
While 1 in 5 is significantly higher than where we are now, it’s also only 1 in 5. This highlights that we can make a significant change without “perfection.” Purchasing 1 in 5 garments through resale is attainable and something that we can all do that will reduce emissions. Our hope is that the Beni extension can make this goal even easier by making the resale purchase process seamless. For Earth Day 2022, we’d be honored for you to join in our pledge to ensure that 1 in 5 of all garments we buy are through circular models like resale. And, of course, we hope Beni can help.
Fun Fact: Many of our Beni team members live in Santa Barbara, CA - the birthplace of Earth Day in 1970. We are proud to be members of the Santa Barbara community and to continue to advocate for climate action.
